Project Spotlight on...
Memoirs of a Meatatarian

I've been working in the field since 2003 designing for some of the biggest brands in the world. In Fall 2008, I decided to take a graduate-level design course at the School of Visual Arts as a way to recharge my batteries, so I used this class as an opportunity to design something different than what I usually do for corporate America. The result? A full-blown (playful) attack against vegetarians in the satirical book series, "Memoirs of a Meatatarian".

A satire-in-the-making from the very beginning, I took the usually-serious nature of memoir writing and turned the books into an autobiographical trilogy for our meat-loving heroine, Carne D'Vour. The titles of the books are cheeky yet wildly appropriate: "The Evolution of a Carnivore', "Survival of the Delicious" and "The Aroma of Burning Flesh".

To keep the mood light, I used pop-art as the driving visual force. The artwork doesn't tie in directly to each of the book titles but rather tell a story when looked at as a whole. The colors were inspired by a Martha Stewart shower curtain palette, which brings a sense of warmth and playfulness to the overall look. The final result is in-your-face, yet there is still a charming overtone that will win over even the most die-hard vegetarian (or not)!
